Apple Rumored to Announce New iPads This Week, But Gurman Says Release 'Won't Happen This Month'

Apple is making progress on new iPad and MacBook models, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman believes that the release of these devices "won't happen this month."

iPad mini and Air Feature 2
"More often than not, the company debuts new laptops and iPads in October — about a month after the latest iPhone and watch get out the door," said Gurman, in his Power On newsletter today. "And while I reported in July that Apple was planning such a release this year, the latest indications are that it won't happen this month."

Gurman went on to say that new iPad Air, iPad mini, and entry-level iPad models are all in development with faster chips, but he does not believe that "updates of any significance are imminent." This wording is more vague compared to his above claim that iPad releases "won't happen this month" whatsoever.

Last month, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said "new iPad models are unlikely before the year's end." If this claim is accurate, 2023 would be the first calendar year with no new iPads announced in the device's 13-year history.

As for MacBooks, Gurman expects the next 14-inch MacBook Pro, 16-inch MacBook Pro, 13-inch MacBook Air, and 15-inch MacBook Air models to launch in the first half of 2024. He did not comment on the iMac or other Macs.

New iPads This Week?

Supercharged and 9to5Mac this weekend both independently reported that Apple plans to announce updated iPad Air, iPad mini, and entry-level iPad models this week, citing sources. Both publications said the iPad Air will be updated with the M2 chip, and said the iPad mini will be updated with the A16 Bionic chip.

It should be a fascinating week ahead for the rumor mill. Who will be right? We will soon find out.

Apple is being smart, they know budgets are being stretched thin especially in an economy that’s somewhat in a recession. The focus I believe is to have major gaps between product launches so consumers can afford what they need instead of feeling pressured to buy every new gadget the company launches in 12 months.

M2 MacBook Pros in January
15 inch Air, as well as updates to Studio and Mac Pro in June
iPhones and Apple watches in September

That’s a reasonable gap between refreshes. The M2 13 inch more than meets the needs for its target audience. Rushing out an M3 model is not gonna necessarily make someone’s basic web browsing, Youtube, social media, email, Slack and Google/Workspace stuff any faster than it already is.

The same applies to the iMac too. The target audience is not looking for feeds and speeds. The just want a nice computer that’s on a table next to their bed or in the living room, they can watch Amazon Prime, Facetime the grand kids, manage their household budgets, look at their photos and maybe create a short 5 minute movie of their trip to the lake over the weekend.

None of this requires a super fast SoC to accomplish. You could very well accomplish this on a 2012 MacBook Pro.

I still see Intel iMacs in peoples apartments. That says something.

But I get it, we are obsessed with the latest and greatest sometimes out of curiosity. Give Apple the time to develop revs of these future products and enjoy what you have now.

Also, go outside, inhale the fresh air, go over to a family or friends house and talk and live in moment a little instead of these squares all day.

Why oh why won’t iPad mini have an M1 so that you can hook it to a studio display?

If Apple does release a new mini 7, I may get one depending on how much difference there will be between the mini 6.
I'll buy one if no jelly scroll, had to return my 6 because of it... other than that it was perfect.

Well they keep refreshing the hardware but the big issue for most iPad owners is the software side... there's only so much they can do with minor spec bumps.. to bump sales. For most people... these minor spec bumps are not a compelling reason to upgrade. Jelly scrolling? for the majority of people this is a non issue next to the lack of decent software.

How about better software! using the current devices... I'd bet a lot of iPad users would even pay for it.. Id pay 30 dollars for a new version of iPad OS that provides a Samsung DEX like experience over an upgrade from M1 to M2 or A15 to A16 etc
